Parkinson’s Queensland Welcomes David McDermott as New President

February 2026 | Parkinson’s Queensland

Parkinson’s Queensland is pleased to announce the appointment of David McDermott as the organisation’s new President, commencing 2 February 2026. This leadership transition follows the conclusion of Cathy Ford’s term as Chair of the Management Committee, which she formally announced in late December.

Cathy’s leadership has played a pivotal role in strengthening Parkinson’s Queensland’s governance, strategic direction, and organisational resilience. Her dedication, professionalism and tireless advocacy for people living with Parkinson’s have made a lasting impact across the organisation and broader community. On behalf of the Board, staff, volunteers, and members, we extend our sincere thanks to Cathy for her outstanding service and commitment.

Following Cathy’s announcement, Vice Chair William Ulyate led the recruitment process to appoint a permanent President, ensuring continuity of leadership and strong governance. Parkinson’s Queensland is delighted to welcome David McDermott to this important role.

David brings more than two decades of experience as a senior strategy consultant, supporting leaders and organisations to clarify direction and achieve long-term impact. His professional background spans a wide range of industries globally, with a strong focus on government and not-for-profit organisations within Australia.

Currently serving as CEO of Vecentra AI, a biotech startup specialising in AI-driven drug discovery and laboratory research, David offers a unique combination of commercial leadership and scientific insight. His work in advancing treatments for neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, aligns closely with Parkinson’s Queensland’s mission and long-term research aspirations.

David’s commitment to the Parkinson’s community is deeply personal. Over the past 25 years, he has witnessed his paternal grandmother’s journey with Parkinson’s disease, giving him firsthand insight into the challenges faced by individuals and families living with the condition. This lived experience continues to shape his passion for advocacy, education and improved access to care.

With a strong background in non-profit governance — including roles as founding CEO of Lucca Leadership Australia and board member of the Northern Rivers Community Foundation — David brings valuable expertise in fundraising strategy, organisational sustainability and stakeholder engagement. He is passionate about leveraging his professional networks and experience to strengthen Parkinson’s Queensland’s impact across the state.

Parkinson’s Queensland looks forward to working with David as President and is confident that his leadership will support the continued growth, innovation and service excellence of the organisation.

We thank Cathy Ford once again for her remarkable contribution and warmly welcome David McDermott as we continue working together to support Queenslanders living with Parkinson’s.
